Scan gives the green light to leave France
Wout Poels is on his way to the Netherlands. On Monday a scan showed that the 24-year-old cyclist from Vacansoleil-DCM was able to be moved. Today, a specifically equipped ambulance came from Amsterdam to Nancy to pick up Poels and take him to the Netherlands. He has to stay in the intensive care unit in a hospital in Venlo for further treatment.
As Poels had been in a foreign hospital, he has to stay in quarantine for three days. ‘The scan confirmed that Wouts health situation is stable and he can be moved, said manager Daan Luijkx. ‘Wout really wanted to leave the French hospital because of the language barrier. In Venlo, nearby his home, the doctors from different hospitals will work together to give him the medical care he needs, said Luijkx.
Last Friday, in the sixth stage of the Tour de France, Poels was involved in a massive crash. He only had 25 kilometers left to the finish. Poels suffered a ruptured kidney and spleen, a bruised lung and three broken ribs. He was taken to the military hospital in Metz and then later transferred to a hospital in Nancy. At the end of the week he will have another scan to assess his rate of recovery.
