Dutch champion time trial hopes for an improvement

The first big time trial of the Tour de France led to a 17th place for Lieuwe Westra. The Dutch champion from Vacansoleil-DCM thinks ‘’not good, not bad’’. ‘’Yesterday and this morning, I felt I wasn’t that good. I think it’s because of the three crashes I’ve had the past few days. If you don’t have a good day, for whatever reason, you will immediately drop ten places. This is the Tour de France, this is the highest level. Here you will find the best riders of the world,’’ said Lieuwe about this situation.

Westra doesn’t want to reach too many conclusions about the 41.5km time trial. ‘’At this moment, in this situation, I rode a pretty good time trial. No more, no less. I have mixed feelings about it. Top twenty classification, but that’s all it is. Maybe I was hoping for more. The first kilometres weren’t good, but the last part of the time trial went well. For once I would like it to go well, then I can make the next step. Hopefully for the second time trial I’ll be physically fit, because I know I can do better.’’
