The Vacansoleil Pro Cycling Team has strengthened its ranks by signing Dutch cyclist Gerben Löwik (31) and Italian Matteo Carrara (29). Both riders have signed a one year contract for 2009. The new Dutch Pro continental team now consists of 21 riders.

Gerben Löwik is an experienced rider and will be a great asset to the team. In addition to once coming third in the Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, he is also an experienced cyclist in shorter races, which was proven by his final victory in the Ster Elektro Tour and the Circuito Franco Belge. Team manager Daan Luijkx is very positive about his new signing saying, “Gerben is well respected within his profession and a role model for other riders. Everyone will listen to any advice he may have, which will result in good performances and team morale. He is very enthusiastic and I am very pleased to have him in my team.”

Matteo Carrara has been signed for the stage races. Italian Carrara has been a professional cyclist since 2001 and he finished in fourth place in the 2007 Round of Switzerland final classification, which is also known as 'the fourth big classic race'. Matteo Carrara has previously competed in five big classic stage races during his career. In 2008 he finished in 36th place in the Tour de France final classification. Carrara also specialises mountain cycling and will compete in the mountain stages with his new team mates Sergey Lagutin and Clément Lhotellerie. Matteo Carrara will be a great addition to the Vacansoleil Pro Cycling Team.
